Villingili

Villingili — known locally and in most travel guides as Vilimalé or Villimalé — is a small, quiet residential island about 2km west of Malé. Unlike Hulhumalé, there's no bridge here — the only way across is the local ferry from Malé's Vilimalé Ferry Terminal, a crossing of around ten minutes.

It's one of the few car-free islands near the capital — only battery-powered and solar vehicles are allowed — which makes it a genuinely quiet half-day escape from Malé's traffic: calm streets, a beach good for a swim or snorkel, and little in the way of formal sightseeing beyond that.

Vilimalé lies about 2km west of Malé, within Kaafu Atoll.

Getting there

There's no bridge to Vilimalé — it's reached only by the local ferry from the Vilimalé Ferry Terminal in Malé, a crossing of roughly 10 minutes with boats running frequently around the clock. Confirm the current fare at the terminal.

Things to do

A swim or snorkel at the beach near the ferry drop-off, a quiet walk through the island's car-free streets, and hedika — savoury Maldivian snacks served with tea — at a beachside café in the afternoon are the main ways to spend a visit here.

Good to know

This is a small residential island with limited tourist infrastructure — it suits a relaxed half-day trip from Malé rather than a full day on its own.
