Planning a fishing holiday in the Maldives is easier when you can see how the days fit together. These sample itineraries are built from our real fishing packages at the Maldives Fishing and Holidays Lodge on Maamendhoo, in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, where our private boat, Emperor, is based. Each one shows how you get there, what a fishing day looks like and what it costs, for 3, 5 and 7 nights.
How a Maldives fishing trip works
Every package follows the same pattern:
- Arrival: fly into Malé, take a domestic flight south and a short boat transfer to Maamendhoo. The flight and transfer are included.
- Stay: full-board accommodation at the Maldives Fishing and Holidays Lodge, a guesthouse on a local island run by the same company as the boat.
- Fishing: a private charter on Emperor, a 32-foot boat with twin 200 HP engines for up to 5 anglers, on every fishing day. You choose full days (about 8 hours) or half days (about 4 hours).
- Fishing days: one fewer than the number of nights, so the arrival and departure days are for travel.
- Departure: boat transfer back to the airport and the return domestic flight to Malé.

3-night Maldives fishing itinerary (2 fishing days)
A short fishing break, ideal to add to a resort holiday or a business trip, or for a first taste of GT fishing.
- Day 1, arrival: land in Malé and connect to the domestic flight south. Boat transfer to Maamendhoo, check in at the lodge, and meet the crew to talk about what you want to catch. Dinner at the lodge.
- Day 2, fishing: full day on Emperor. Pop the channel mouths and reef edges for giant trevally while the tide runs, and jig the reef walls for dogtooth tuna and groupers when it slackens.
- Day 3, fishing: a second full day. Depending on the season and what you caught on day 2, try trolling offshore for yellowfin tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi, or go back to the GT spots.
- Day 4, departure: breakfast, boat transfer and domestic flight back to Malé for your onward journey.
Price (full-day fishing): USD 3,670 per person for 1 angler, USD 2,170 for 2, USD 1,420 for 4 or USD 1,270 per person for 5. With half-day fishing, from USD 1,070 per person for 5.

- Day 1, arrival: fly to Malé, domestic flight south, boat transfer to Maamendhoo. Check in, meet the crew, rig your tackle.
- Day 2, GT popping: a full day focused on giant trevally, popping the outer reef and channels on the running tide.
- Day 3, jigging: work the deep reef walls for dogtooth tuna, groupers and snappers, with popping sessions on the tide changes.
- Day 4, offshore: troll the deep blue water beyond the reef for yellowfin tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi, and cast to feeding tuna if they show.

What a fishing day looks like
A full-day charter is about 8 hours on the water and a half day about 4 hours. The crew plans each day around the tide, the weather and the season. Moving water switches the GT on, so popping sessions are timed for the running tide; slack water is used for jigging or moving to the next spot; and offshore trolling fills the runs between reefs. Soft drinks and snacks are on board, and basic fishing gear is included. A professional popping or jigging rod and reel setup is USD 80 per setup if you don't bring your own.
Evenings are spent at the lodge on Maamendhoo, a local island where life moves slowly: dinner, stories from the day, and an early night before the next morning's fishing.

Short on time? One-day fishing plans
- A single private charter: book Emperor for a full day (USD 1,380 per boat) or a half day (USD 980 per boat) for up to 5 anglers.
- A sunset trip near Malé: if you're staying on a local island such as Maafushi, a shared sunset handline trip costs from USD 25–30 per person.
- Private Half-Day Fishing Charter

Itinerary planning tips
- Choose your season. April to October is the most commonly reported GT season; December to April brings calmer seas and offshore tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi. See the best time to fish in the Maldives.
- Bring friends. Prices fall sharply per person as more anglers share the boat: on packages of 4 nights or more, 5 anglers each pay less than a third of the solo price.
- Allow a buffer. Leave time between your international and domestic flights, and consider a night in Malé or Hulhumalé on the way.
- Combine with a resort stay. Many anglers add a few nights at a resort before or after the fishing.
- Pack well. See our fishing holiday packing list.
