Best Fishing Spots in the Maldives: Atolls, Channels and Reefs

Where to fish in the Maldives: the best atolls for fishing, from remote Gaafu Alifu in the south to the atolls around Malé, and the channels, outer reefs, thilas and offshore waters where each species feeds.

The Maldives is made up of 26 natural atolls spread over hundreds of kilometres of the Indian Ocean, and the fishing changes from one to the next. Some atolls are busy with resorts and boats; others, especially in the far south, see very few anglers. Within each atoll, the fish gather in the same kinds of places: channels, outer reef edges, underwater pinnacles and the open ocean beyond the reef. This guide covers the best fishing spots in the Maldives, starting with our home waters in Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

Types of fishing spots in the Maldives

Before choosing an atoll, it helps to know what makes a good spot. These are the places Maldivian captains fish:

  • Channels (kandu). Gaps in the atoll rim where the tide flows between the lagoon and the ocean. Baitfish are swept through on every tide, and predators such as giant trevally, bluefin trevally and dogtooth tuna wait at the channel mouths.
  • Outer reef edges and drop-offs. Where the coral wall falls away into deep water. These are the classic spots for popping and jigging for GT and dogtooth tuna.
  • Thilas. Underwater pinnacles rising from deep water inside or near the atolls. They hold groupers, snappers, jacks and other reef fish, and are good jigging spots.
  • Offshore waters and FADs. The deep blue water beyond the atolls, where yellowfin tuna, skipjack, wahoo, mahi-mahi, sailfish and marlin hunt. Boats troll here and look for birds and floating debris, or fish around the fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored offshore.
  • Lagoons and flats. Shallow sand and coral areas inside the atolls, used for fly fishing and calm reef fishing.

1. Gaafu Alifu Atoll: the best fishing in the south

Gaafu Alifu is the northern half of Huvadhu Atoll, one of the largest atolls in the world, in the deep south of the Maldives. Its long outer reef is broken by many channels, the drop-offs fall straight into deep ocean water, and very few fishing boats work it. That makes it one of the best places in the Maldives for GT fishing, popping and jigging, with yellowfin tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi offshore and dogtooth tuna on the reef walls.

Our private boat, Emperor, is based on Maamendhoo, a local island in Gaafu Alifu, at the Maldives Fishing and Holidays Lodge. Staying on the atoll means you are close to the channels and outer reef rather than spending hours travelling to them. Emperor costs USD 1,380 per boat for a full day or USD 980 for a half day, for up to 5 anglers.

Best for: GT popping and jigging, dogtooth tuna, offshore trolling, anglers who want remote, quiet reefs. Read more in our Gaafu Atoll fishing guide.

2. Gaafu Dhaalu and the far south

Gaafu Dhaalu is the southern half of Huvadhu Atoll and shares the same geography as Gaafu Alifu: a huge atoll with a long outer reef, deep channels and little fishing pressure. Further south still, Addu Atoll, the southernmost atoll in the Maldives, sits right at the edge of the deep ocean. The far south as a whole is the place to go for anglers who want big reef predators and open water close to the atolls.

Best for: GT, dogtooth tuna, offshore pelagics.

3. Laamu, Thaa and Meemu

The atolls south of Malé, such as Laamu, Thaa and Meemu, have fewer resorts than the central atolls and plenty of channels and outer reef. They are good all-round fishing atolls, with GT and jacks in the channels, reef fish on the thilas and pelagics offshore.

Best for: all-round fishing away from the busiest areas.

4. North and South Malé Atolls

The atolls around Malé are the most convenient for a fishing trip: they're close to the international airport, and many local islands, such as Maafushi and Himmafushi, run fishing trips. The reefs see more boat traffic than the remote atolls, but there is still good fishing on the outer reefs and in the channels, and the deep water between the atolls is good for trolling. This is also where you'll find the most shared sunset fishing trips.

Best for: short trips, sunset fishing, travellers staying near Malé.

5. Ari (Alifu) Atoll

Ari Atoll, west of Malé, is one of the best-known resort atolls, with many thilas and channels. Resorts and local islands here run reef fishing, sunset fishing and trolling trips, and the thilas hold good numbers of reef fish.

Best for: reef fishing and trolling from resorts and local islands.

6. Vaavu Atoll

Vaavu, south-east of Malé, is a small atoll with few islands and strong channels on its eastern side facing the open ocean. Its channels and outer reefs are better known to divers, but the same currents that bring the sharks bring the baitfish and the predators that feed on them.

Best for: channel fishing close to Malé.

7. The northern atolls: Baa, Raa, Lhaviyani and Noonu

The atolls north of Malé offer good reef fishing and trolling, with resorts and local islands running trips. Note that Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and some areas, such as Hanifaru Bay, are protected, so fishing is not allowed there. Your captain will know where you can fish.

Best for: reef fishing and trolling on a resort holiday in the north.

Fishing from a local island or a resort?

Where you stay shapes where you can fish. Resorts usually run their own fishing trips from the resort's watersports centre, which is convenient but limits you to the waters near the resort and its timetable. Local islands, such as Maafushi near Malé or Maamendhoo in Gaafu Alifu, have guesthouses, local captains and boats that fish every day, and prices are usually lower.

For a fishing-focused trip, staying on a local island close to the fishing grounds is hard to beat: you can fish early, come back for lunch, and go out again on the evening tide. On Maamendhoo, the Maldives Fishing and Holidays Lodge and Emperor are run by the same operator, so your room, meals and fishing are arranged together.

How to choose where to fish

  • For serious GT and popping: go south, to Gaafu Alifu or the other southern atolls.
  • For a few hours' fishing on a beach holiday: fish where you're staying; most islands and resorts near Malé run trips.
  • For offshore tuna and wahoo: any atoll with deep water close to the reef works; pick the season (December to March for yellowfin).
  • For a dedicated fishing holiday: stay on the fishing grounds. A lodge on the atoll beats long daily boat runs from a resort.

Fishing holidays on the best fishing grounds

Our fishing packages put you on Gaafu Alifu's fishing grounds: full-board accommodation at the lodge on Maamendhoo, the return domestic flight, the boat transfer and a private Emperor charter on every fishing day. A 4-night package with 3 full fishing days costs USD 2,920 per person for 2 anglers or USD 1,570 per person for 5.
