Popping and jigging have turned remote reefs all over the tropics into bucket-list destinations. Popping means casting big surface lures for giant trevally and other predators; jigging means working heavy metal jigs down the reef for dogtooth tuna, amberjack, groupers and GT that won't come to the top. The best destinations let you do both on the same trip. This guide covers the best popping and jigging destinations in the world, what each place does best, and why the Maldives, and Gaafu Alifu Atoll in particular, is one of the easiest places to try both.
What makes a great popping and jigging destination?
- Shallow reef edges for popping, where predators push bait against the reef and strike on the surface.
- Deep walls, pinnacles and banks for jigging, close to the popping grounds so you can switch between them.
- Strong tides and currents, which concentrate baitfish and switch the fish on.
- Low fishing pressure, so the big fish are still there.
- A good boat and crew who know where the fish sit on each tide.
1. Maldives: Gaafu Alifu Atoll
The Maldives may be the most complete popping and jigging destination in the world. Every atoll is a ring of reef cut by channels, with shallow reef edges for popping and steep outer walls dropping into deep water for jigging, often within a few minutes of each other. On one tide you can pop the channel mouth for giant trevally and bluefin trevally; on the next, jig the wall below for dogtooth tuna, groupers, snappers and amberjack.
The quietest reefs are in the far south. Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the northern half of Huvadhu Atoll, has a long outer reef broken by many channels and very few boats fishing it. Our private boat, Emperor, is based on Maamendhoo in Gaafu Alifu, at the Maldives Fishing and Holidays Lodge. Emperor is a 32-foot boat with twin 200 HP engines for up to 5 anglers, and the crew runs popping and jigging days planned around the tide. A full day costs USD 1,380 per boat and a half day USD 980; a professional popping or jigging rod and reel setup is USD 80 per setup.

2. Andaman Islands, India
The Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal are one of Asia's best-known popping and jigging destinations. Reefs, pinnacles and channels around remote islands hold GT for popping, and deep structure for jigging dogtooth tuna and reef fish. Trips run on boats and liveaboards that reach the less-visited islands.
Known for: GT popping, dogtooth tuna jigging. Trip type: boats and liveaboards.
3. Oman
Oman's Arabian Sea coast and islands are a rugged, remote destination for heavy popping, with jigging over rocky reefs and banks. The fishing is physical and the setting wild, with simple camps or small towns as bases.
Known for: big GT on poppers, jigging for reef predators. Trip type: boat trips from camps and towns.

4. Sudan: the Red Sea
Sudan's remote Red Sea reefs are fished from liveaboards on week-long trips. Anglers pop the reef tops and jig the drop-offs, moving between offshore reefs that see very little pressure.
Known for: GT and other reef predators on poppers and jigs. Trip type: week-long liveaboard.
5. Japan
Japan has shaped modern popping and jigging. Slow-pitch jigging, with its short lifts and fluttering jigs, was developed by Japanese anglers, and much of the world's specialist popping and jigging tackle is designed there. The country's southern islands, such as the Tokara Islands south of Kyushu, are famous for heavy GT popping in strong currents.
Known for: GT popping, slow-pitch jigging. Trip type: boat trips.
6. Indonesia
Indonesia's thousands of islands hold endless reefs, pinnacles and current-swept passes. Popping and jigging trips, often on liveaboards, explore remote areas for GT, dogtooth tuna and a wide variety of reef fish.
Known for: variety and exploration. Trip type: liveaboards and island bases.

7. Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea's remote reefs and islands are some of the least-fished waters in the Pacific. Popping for GT and jigging for dogtooth tuna and reef fish can be outstanding, but trips take careful planning and long travel.
Known for: wilderness popping and jigging. Trip type: boats and liveaboards.
8. Mozambique
Mozambique's Indian Ocean coast and offshore banks offer popping for GT and jigging over deep reefs and banks for amberjack, dogtooth tuna and reef fish, alongside other sport fishing.
Known for: jigging deep banks, popping reef edges. Trip type: boat trips from coastal bases.
9. Australia: the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef
The Coral Sea's offshore reefs and the outer Great Barrier Reef hold GT for popping and deep structure for jigging. Many trips are liveaboards, and fishing is only allowed in permitted zones of the marine parks.
Known for: popping and jigging as part of wider reef fishing. Trip type: liveaboards and day boats.

Popping and jigging species
These are the fish that make popping and jigging destinations famous. Most of them are found in the Maldives.
- Giant trevally (GT). The ultimate popping fish: huge, aggressive and powerful, with surface strikes that explode out of the water. Also caught jigging.
- Bluefin trevally. A smaller, brilliantly coloured trevally that hunts in packs along the reef and attacks poppers and small jigs.
- Dogtooth tuna. The classic jigging target: a reef-dwelling tuna with sharp teeth that hits jigs deep and dives straight for the reef.
- Amberjack. Strong, deep-water jacks that take jigs over wrecks, banks and pinnacles.
- Groupers and snappers. Reef fish that hit jigs near the bottom, especially on slow-pitch tackle, and are among the best fish to eat.
- Yellowfin tuna. When schools feed on the surface, casting poppers and stickbaits to them is one of the most exciting moments in sport fishing.
What to pack for a popping and jigging trip
- Rods and reels: at least one heavy popping outfit and one jigging outfit, or arrange a professional setup with the operator.
- Lures and jigs: a range of poppers and stickbaits, and jigs in several weights for different depths and currents.
- Terminal tackle: spare leader, strong split rings, solid rings, assist hooks and single hooks for popping lures.
- Body protection: a fighting belt or gimbal, gloves, a sun hat, a buff, polarised sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Tools: pliers, split-ring pliers and a small repair kit.

Why the Maldives is ideal for popping and jigging
- Both techniques within minutes. Reef edges for popping and deep walls for jigging sit side by side on every atoll.
- Remote, quiet reefs in the south. Gaafu Alifu's channels see very few boats.
- Sleep on land. Stay at a lodge on a local island and fish the tides from a private boat, instead of living on a liveaboard.
- Clear prices. USD 1,380 per boat for a full day for up to 5 anglers, and fixed per-person package prices.
- Easy access. Many international routes reach Malé, then a domestic flight and short boat transfer.

When to go, and how to fish responsibly
Every destination has its best months, set by monsoons, trade winds and water temperature, so check the season for your target species before you book. In the Maldives you can pop and jig all year; the season most commonly reported for GT is April to October, and dogtooth tuna are most often caught from November to April.
Wherever you go, the best popping and jigging destinations stay good because anglers look after them. Swap treble hooks for single hooks on popping lures, keep fights short with strong tackle, support big fish horizontally for photos, and release GT and other slow-growing reef predators. Keep only what you will eat, and follow local rules on protected areas and species.
How to choose a popping and jigging destination
- Decide your balance. If popping is the priority, choose a destination with lots of shallow reef edges. If jigging matters as much, make sure deep structure is close by.
- Land or liveaboard. Liveaboards reach the most remote reefs; a lodge gives you comfort and flexibility.
- Travel time vs fishing time. Count the days spent travelling, not just fishing.
- Tackle. Most destinations expect you to bring popping and jigging outfits. On Emperor, basic gear is included and a pro setup is available.
- Season. Check the best months for your target species before you book.
