Maldives vs Seychelles for GT Fishing: Which Should You Choose?

A side-by-side comparison of the Maldives and the Seychelles for giant trevally fishing: style of fishing, how trips are organised, getting there, seasons and price, with our own Gaafu Alifu charter and packages.

9 min read

The Maldives and the Seychelles are the two most famous giant trevally destinations in the Indian Ocean, and both can produce the GT of a lifetime. But they offer very different fishing. The Seychelles' outer islands are best known for chasing GT with a fly on shallow flats; the Maldives is about popping and jigging from a boat along reef edges and channels. This guide compares the Maldives and the Seychelles for GT fishing so you can pick the trip that suits you.

GT fishing in the Maldives

The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls, each a ring of reef cut through by channels and surrounded by deep ocean. Giant trevally hunt along the outer reef edges and gather at the channel mouths when the tide pushes baitfish between the lagoons and the open sea. That makes the Maldives perfect for popping with big surface lures and jigging the reef walls, both from a boat.

The best GT fishing is in the remote south. Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the northern half of Huvadhu Atoll, has a long outer reef broken by many channels and very little fishing pressure. Our private boat, Emperor, is based there on Maamendhoo, at the Maldives Fishing and Holidays Lodge. Emperor is a 32-foot boat with twin 200 HP engines for up to 5 anglers. A full day costs USD 1,380 per boat and a half day USD 980, including the captain and crew, fuel, soft drinks and snacks, and basic gear.

GT fishing in the Seychelles

The Seychelles is split between the granite inner islands around Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, and the coral outer islands and atolls far to the south-west. The outer islands, with their huge shallow flats and lagoons, are famous worldwide for fly fishing. Anglers wade or pole across the flats and sight-cast to giant trevally cruising in the shallows, often alongside bonefish, permit, triggerfish and milkfish. There is also popping along the reef edges and surf lines.

Because the outer islands are so remote, trips are usually organised as week-long stays at an island lodge or on a mothership, reached by onward flights or boat from Mahé. Places are limited and popular weeks book up far in advance. Boat-based sport fishing, including for GT, is also available around the inner granite islands.

Fishing style: popping and jigging vs fly fishing

This is the biggest difference between the two countries. If you want to cast big poppers and stickbaits from a boat, fight GT on heavy spinning tackle, and jig the deep reef for dogtooth tuna and groupers, the Maldives is built for it. If your dream is to see a GT charge a fly in knee-deep water, and you're happy to spend a week wading flats for bonefish, permit and triggerfish too, the Seychelles' outer islands are the classic choice.

Boat-based popping tends to put you in front of larger GT around deep reef structure, while flats fishing is about the visual thrill of hunting fish in the shallows. Neither is better; they are different experiences. Our popping and jigging guide explains the Maldives style in detail.

Other fish you can catch

A GT trip is rarely only about GT. In the Maldives, the same boat that pops the reef edges can jig the deep walls for dogtooth tuna, groupers and snappers, and troll offshore for yellowfin tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi, with the chance of a sailfish or marlin. If the GT are quiet, there is always something else to fish for, and many anglers come home with a mixed bag of species from a single day.

In the Seychelles' outer islands, the other targets are flats species: bonefish, which are found in big numbers, plus permit, several kinds of triggerfish and milkfish. For a fly angler, catching several of these on one trip is a big part of the appeal.

Getting there and how trips work

Maldives: many international routes fly to Malé. From there, a domestic flight south (USD 365 per person) and a short boat transfer bring you to Maamendhoo in Gaafu Alifu. You sleep in a room at the lodge, eat full-board meals, and go fishing on a private boat each day. You can book a single day, a few days, or a package of 2 to 8 nights, and start on the day that suits you.

Seychelles: international flights arrive at Mahé. Reaching the outer islands takes an onward flight or a boat journey, and trips usually run on fixed weekly dates. You stay in a remote lodge or on a mothership with a small group of anglers for the week.

Seasons

In the Maldives, GT can be caught all year; the season most commonly reported for GT is April to October, while the calmer northeast monsoon from December to April is the best time for offshore tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi. See the best time to fish in the Maldives. The Seychelles also has two monsoon seasons, and outer-island fishing trips run in the months when wind and tides suit the flats; check dates with the operator.

Cost: Maldives vs Seychelles

Outer-island fishing in the Seychelles is a limited-capacity, premium trip, priced per angler for a week and set by each operator, so ask them for current prices. In the Maldives you can control the cost more: a private charter is priced per boat, so a group of five anglers pays USD 276 each for a full day on Emperor, and our packages have fixed per-person prices that include the domestic flight, transfer, lodge, meals and fishing.

Which should you choose?

Choose the Maldives if you:

  • want boat-based GT popping and jigging around deep reef and channels
  • want a private boat for your group at a known price per boat
  • prefer flexible dates and trip lengths, from a single day to a week
  • want other species on the same trip: dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi and groupers
  • want a shorter journey from the international airport to the fishing

Choose the Seychelles if you:

  • are a fly angler who wants to sight-cast to GT on flats
  • want a full week on remote flats with bonefish, permit and triggerfish
  • can book well in advance for fixed weekly dates

Many GT anglers end up fishing both, years apart. For more destinations, see our list of the best GT fishing destinations in the world.
