Discover Fuvahmulah - The Unique Island Atoll of the Maldives
Gnaviyani Atoll is a unique administrative division in the Maldives consisting of just one island - Fuvahmulah. Located in the southern reaches of the Maldives archipelago, approximately 500 km south of Male', this distinctive island stands apart from other Maldivian atolls both geographically and culturally.
Unlike typical Maldivian atolls that consist of ring-shaped coral formations with multiple islands, Fuvahmulah is a single large island formed on an oceanic plateau. This unique geography has created a distinctive environment with freshwater lakes, lush vegetation, and a remarkable marine ecosystem that attracts divers from around the world, particularly for its famous tiger shark encounters.
With its rich cultural heritage, natural wonders, and growing tourism infrastructure, Fuvahmulah offers visitors an authentic and off-the-beaten-path Maldivian experience unlike any other island in the archipelago.
Fuvahmulah is world-renowned for its tiger shark diving experiences. The island's unique location and underwater topography create perfect conditions for regular tiger shark sightings, making it one of the few places in the world where divers can reliably encounter these magnificent predators in their natural habitat.
Unlike any other island in the Maldives, Fuvahmulah features two natural freshwater lakes (locally known as "Bandaara Kilhi" and "Dhadimagi Kilhi"). These unique ecological features support distinctive flora and fauna and are important wetland habitats for migratory birds.
The famous Thundi Beach on the eastern side of Fuvahmulah features unique white and black pebbles instead of the typical white sand found on other Maldivian islands. This distinctive beach is a popular spot for photography and relaxation.
Unlike many Maldivian atolls that feature luxury resorts, Fuvahmulah offers a more authentic local experience with a variety of guesthouses and hotels:

Fuvahmulah is the hidden gem of the Maldives! I came specifically for the tiger shark diving and was not disappointed - we had multiple close encounters on every dive. The island itself is so different from the typical Maldivian resort islands - it's bigger, greener, and has a fascinating local culture. The freshwater lakes were a surprising highlight. Staying at a local guesthouse gave me a much more authentic experience than a typical resort would have. Highly recommend for adventurous travelers!
I visited Fuvahmulah for a week and loved the unique experience it offers compared to other parts of the Maldives. The tiger shark diving was incredible - a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The local food was delicious and the people were incredibly welcoming. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the island doesn't have the pristine white sand beaches you might expect from the Maldives - instead it has unique pebble beaches and dramatic coastlines. It's perfect for adventure travelers but might not be what you're looking for if you want the typical postcard Maldives experience.
