PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver Course
Dive longer, stay deeper, and maximize your underwater experience in the Maldives
Dive Longer with Enriched Air
The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is the most popular PADI specialty course. Why? Because scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more no-decompression dive time, especially on repetitive dives. This means longer bottom times, shorter surface intervals, and more time exploring the incredible marine life of the Maldives. If you're planning multiple dives per day on your Maldives vacation, nitrox certification is a must-have.
๐ซ The Most Popular PADI Specialty Course
Enriched Air (Nitrox) is the #1 specialty certification worldwide. In the Maldives, where multiple daily dives are common, nitrox is essential for maximizing your underwater experience while enhancing safety.
Why Learn Nitrox in the Maldives?
The Maldives is the perfect place to learn and use enriched air nitrox. With multiple daily dives to explore the incredible reefs, channels, and thilas, nitrox allows you to maximize your underwater time while reducing nitrogen loading.
Many Maldivian resorts and liveaboards offer nitrox as standard, making it an essential certification for your diving vacation. Our course combines comprehensive theory with practical application, teaching you to analyze tanks and plan dives using enriched air.
Whether you're planning a week of intensive diving or want to explore deeper sites with more bottom time, nitrox certification will significantly enhance your Maldives diving experience.

The Science of Nitrox
Understanding the science behind enriched air nitrox is essential for safe diving practices.
What is Nitrox?
Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) is a breathing gas containing a higher percentage of oxygen than standard air. While normal air contains 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen, nitrox typically contains 32-36% oxygen and correspondingly less nitrogen.
This reduction in nitrogen is what provides the primary benefits of nitrox diving, as nitrogen is the gas responsible for decompression sickness and no-decompression limits.
Partial Pressure & MOD
The increased oxygen content in nitrox means divers must be aware of oxygen toxicity risks. We calculate a Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) based on the partial pressure of oxygen (PPO2).
For recreational diving, we maintain a PPO2 of 1.4 ATA or less. For example, EAN32 (32% oxygen) has an MOD of approximately 34 meters/111 feet, while EAN36 has an MOD of about 29 meters/95 feet.
Equivalent Air Depth
Equivalent Air Depth (EAD) is a concept that allows divers to use standard air tables with nitrox. By calculating the EAD, you can determine what depth on air would give the same nitrogen loading as your actual depth on nitrox.
For example, diving to 30m/100ft on EAN32 is equivalent to diving to approximately 24m/80ft on air in terms of nitrogen absorption.
Nitrox Benefits Comparison
This table illustrates the extended no-decompression limits (NDL) when using nitrox compared to air at various depths.
Depth | Air (21% Oโ) NDL | EAN32 (32% Oโ) NDL | EAN36 (36% Oโ) NDL | Time Increase |
---|---|---|---|---|
18m / 60ft | 56 minutes | 95 minutes | 125 minutes | +69-123% |
21m / 70ft | 40 minutes | 65 minutes | 80 minutes | +63-100% |
24m / 80ft | 30 minutes | 50 minutes | 60 minutes | +67-100% |
27m / 90ft | 25 minutes | 40 minutes | 50 minutes | +60-100% |
30m / 100ft | 20 minutes | 30 minutes | 40 minutes | +50-100% |
*Values are approximate and based on standard recreational dive tables. Always use your dive computer or current dive tables for actual dive planning.
Analyzing Nitrox Tanks
A critical skill you'll learn is how to analyze your nitrox tank to verify the oxygen content before diving.

Analysis Procedure:
- Calibrate the analyzer in fresh air (20.9% oxygen)
- Connect the analyzer to the tank valve using the flow restrictor
- Open the tank valve slightly to allow a gentle flow of gas
- Wait for the reading to stabilize (usually 10-15 seconds)
- Record the oxygen percentage on your tank log and nitrox tank sticker
- Calculate your Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) based on the analyzed percentage
- Label your tank with the appropriate nitrox sticker, oxygen content, MOD, date, and your signature

Frequently Asked Questions
When used properly, nitrox is not more dangerous than air. The primary risk is exceeding the Maximum Operating Depth (MOD), which could lead to oxygen toxicity. This is why proper training, tank analysis, and respecting depth limits are essential. When these protocols are followed, nitrox actually provides an added safety margin against decompression sickness.
No, the PADI Enriched Air Diver course can be completed with theory sessions only. However, we recommend the complete package with training dives to gain practical experience analyzing tanks and diving with nitrox. These dives can be conducted during your regular diving activities in the Maldives.
The extended bottom time depends on the depth and nitrox mix. At common recreational depths (18-30m/60-100ft), you can expect approximately 30-100% more no-decompression time compared to air. For example, at 18m/60ft, your no-decompression limit might increase from 56 minutes on air to 95 minutes on EAN32.
For recreational nitrox mixes (up to 40% oxygen), standard scuba equipment that is "oxygen clean" is suitable. Most modern regulators are nitrox compatible out of the box. If you own your own equipment, check with the manufacturer to confirm it's rated for nitrox use. Rental equipment provided by dive centers for nitrox diving is always properly prepared.
In the Maldives, nitrox fills typically cost about $5-10 more than air fills. However, many resorts and liveaboards offer unlimited nitrox at a flat daily or weekly rate, or even include it in their diving packages. Given the benefits of extended bottom times and reduced surface intervals, most divers find the small additional cost well worth it.
No, nitrox is not used to increase depth. In fact, nitrox mixes have a shallower Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) than air due to oxygen toxicity risks. The primary benefit of nitrox is extended bottom times at standard recreational depths, not increased depth capability. For deep diving beyond recreational limits, technical diving with trimix is required.
